Ingredients

Cheesy chicken and sauce base
  • 2 cup cooked, shredded chicken
  • 10.5 oz cream of chicken soup (can)
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • 0.5 tsp paprika
  • 0.25 salt and pepper, to taste
  • 32 oz frozen tater tots (bag)
  • 0.5 cup shredded cheddar cheese, divided

Equipment

  • 1 sheet pan

Method

Prep and combine
  1. Preheat the oven to 350F and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the cream of chicken soup, sour cream, 1 cup of the cheddar cheese, paprika, salt, and pepper until smooth.
  3. Stir in the shredded chicken until well coated, then spread the mixture evenly into the prepared dish.
Top and bake
  1. Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single even layer over the chicken mixture.
  2. Bake for 30-35 minutes until the tater tots are golden and crisp, with edges visibly browned.
  3. Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese over the top and bake another 5 minutes until melted and bubbling.

Notes

For the crispiest top, keep the tater tots in a single layer with minimal gaps so they brown evenly. Store covered in the refrigerator up to 3-4 days; reheat individual portions in the oven at 350F until hot. Freezing: yes, freeze baked leftovers up to 2 months and reheat from thawed or bake until warmed through. For a lighter option, use reduced-fat sour cream and cheese while keeping the bake time the same to maintain the crunchy tater-tot layer.
